Many years ago I had a French friend who would come out with the funniest French expressions for something that had happened or something someone had said. The thing is she usually translated them directly into English and then said them in English. They made no sense when they weren't in French and always made me hysterical with laughter. She was a good sport though and explained the meaning in French if it was one I hadn't heard of. But these funny moments made me think of all the odd expressions we have in our mother tongues. To us they make perfect sense because we grow up with them and we rarely have to explain them, but imagine hearing them as a foreigner! Norway is no different and there are countless hilarious and mind-boggling expressions that will have you laughing.
I want to share a few of more common and well used ones, so on your next trip to Norway you won't be too baffled by some of the odd expressions!
