Pålsmesse, a Special Day on the Runic Calendar

The Primstav is marked with symbols that have meaning for each of the important days of the year

A few years ago my blogging journey started with a book. It's called "Hverdagskost og Festmat Langs Primstav" and it was a Christmas gift that got me interested in the Nordic primstav. The primstav is a runic calender usually displayed in the form of a stick with summer months on one side and winter months on the other. Important days are marked with a symbol. The symbols can be a sword, a cross, a branch, a light. In fact anything that is a reminder of what that day means. Many of the days are religious, but most of them are rooted in pagan history and folklore and have important messages for those reading them.

I started following the primstav and it fascinated me that despite it being something of a relic so many of the days we still mark now whether we realise it or not.
